A Poem for Stephen Colbert

My Fellow Democracy Defenders,

Stephen Colbert is a national treasure. The fascists enablers at CBS have cancelled his brilliant show in an attack on free speech. I hope he comes to Substack! He inspired me to write a poem for him, like many others who fight fascists. “The Jester of Science”

In the land of the free, where shadows loom,
A jester rises to pierce the gloom.
With a wink, a quip, and a razor’s edge,
Stephen Colbert storms the tyrant’s pledge.

Fascist Trump, the bluster, the golden mane,
A carnival barker in power’s domain,
Leading with lies, a democracy’s dread,
But Stephen steps forth, unafraid, well-read.

“Democracy’s fragile!” the jester cries,
As he skewers the braggart with twinkling eyes.
Each monologue stings, each jest a dart,
Aiming for truth, piercing the heart.

“Covfefe!” he mocks, “and bleach, oh my!”
Exposing the folly, the dangerous lie.
Yet satire alone cannot heal the land,
When a plague descends, a grim demand.

COVID whispers through city and plain,
A test of our will, a test of our sane.
But Stephen, the herald, takes up the call,
“Get the shot, my friends, protect one and all!”

With science as shield and humor as sword,
He battles the skeptics, the misinformed horde.
“Roll up your sleeve, it’s not just for you,
It’s for neighbors, for loved ones, for the red, white, and blue!”

He dances with Fauci, he jests with the jab,
Turning fear into laughter, a cultural stab.
The jester’s a guardian, though cloaked in mirth,
Reminding us all of democracy’s worth.

Through mockery sharp, through kindness sincere,
He banishes chaos, he conquers fear.
For Trump’s reign of bluster, he offers a cure,
For vaccine hesitance, a voice strong and sure.

So here’s to Colbert, the late-night knight,
Defending our freedoms with comedic might.
In laughter we trust, in truth we abide,
With Stephen as guide, democracy strides.
