OH, CANADA!
A poem saluting Mark Carney, the new prime minister of Canada who will defend democracy against Trump
My Fellow Democracy Defenders,
Mark Carney has prevailed against fascism in the true north, strong and free!
Like me and my partner, he is the proud parent of a nonbinary child:
I wish we had a leader like him. Perhaps it’s time to move to Canada! He has inspired me to write a poem about him:
Guardian of the True North
In halls where maple leaves once danced,
A shadow crept from distant lands—
With golden towers and iron tongue,
A voice that drummed and banners swung.
But lo! From westward winds there came
No tyrant clad in soldier’s flame,
No coup, no storming of the gates—
Just whispers dressed in sharper fates.
Yet mark the man with steady hand,
Mark Carney stands on freedom’s land.
No flash of sword, no war-cry grand—
Just principles upon firm stand.
He knows the cost of truth undone,
The silent scream beneath the sun;
How fascist seeds in polite guise
Can choke the roots of liberty.
From Ottawa’s halls, he lifts his gaze,
Past border lines and smoky haze,
And sees the test not waged with guns—
But fought in courts, in votes, in runs.
He calls to Canadians with pride:
“Our rights were bought, our voices wide.
We’ll not be swayed by fear or gold,
Nor trade our votes for promises bold.”
He builds no wall, but opens doors
To refugees, to thinkers, scores—
He champions science, truth, and law,
And guards the Charter, thread and flaw.
When others flinch before the storm,
He sharpens reason into form:
A leader forged in central banks,
Now wielding words like ancient tanks.
Not with aggression, but resolve,
He meets the tide that would dissolve
The bonds we've sewn through pain and strife—
The sacred gift of democratic life.
So let them mock from distant shores,
With bluster cloaked in hollow roars—
For Carney stands on guard for thee,
In Canada, democracy will be.
