Moving to Canada to Escape MAGA Fascism
The benefits of Canada compared to America under Trump's Christofascist Project 2025 regime
My fellow Americans,
Should we consider moving to Canada to escape Trump? I have seriously considered this option and know a few people who left in 2016. They rave about all the ways Canada is better than America. While many of us are staying for now to resist Trump, we should not judge anyone who chooses this option. Trudeau is a Progressive feminist who reminds me of Obama. Canada has a long, proud history of freedom as a stop on the Underground Railroad and haven for Vietnam war draft dodgers. Now they are banning guns and giving them to Ukraine to help the heroic Volodymyr Zelensky’s ongoing fight to save democracy.
Here are reasons I have heard from friends why our northern neighbors provide a welcoming place for American refugees.
Universal Healthcare
Canada's public healthcare system is a significant draw for Americans who struggle with healthcare costs or lack of access to quality healthcare in the United States. Canada's system is more comprehensive and affordable.Social and Cultural Diversity
Canada is known for its welcoming nature, and many Americans appreciate the country's diverse culture and social values. Canada's emphasis on multiculturalism and tolerance creates a sense of community and belonging. I have had the best Chinese food in Vancouver, the best Indian food in Toronto, and of course poutine in Montreal.Economic Opportunities
Canada has a strong economy with a high standard of living, offering many job opportunities. They are strong in fields like technology, finance, and healthcare and will attract more talented immigrants now that Trump has ruined our immigration system. Americans can also take advantage of Canada's lower cost of living.Natural Beauty and Outdoor Activities
Canada's vast wilderness, mountains, and coastlines provide endless opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking and skiing to kayaking and camping, Canada's natural beauty is a significant draw for nature lovers. Banff is more beautiful than any American national park!Language
English is widely spoken, making it relatively easy for Americans to integrate and communicate. French is common in Quebec, but Americans can fit in just fine.Gun Control Laws
Canada has far stricter gun control laws compared to the United States. They have almost no mass shootings or murders.Environmental Policies
Canada has been at the forefront of ESG environmental policies, including climate change initiatives. They prioritize net zero sustainability and green living.Education
Canada's education system is highly regarded, with top-ranked universities and a strong focus on public education. McGill and Waterloo are world class!Immigration Policies
Canada's immigration policies are generally more welcoming and streamlined compared to those in the United States. The Express Entry system and Provincial Nominee Programs offer various pathways for Americans to obtain permanent residency or citizenship.Geographic Proximity
Canada's proximity to the United States makes it an accessible and convenient option for Americans who want to maintain ties with family and friends while still experiencing a new culture.
Challenges and Considerations
While these benefits may appeal to Americans considering a move to Canada, it's essential to acknowledge the potential issues involved:
Immigration process: While Canada's immigration policies are more welcoming, the process can still be complex and time-consuming.
Job market: While Canada has a strong economy, the job market can be competitive, especially in certain fields.
Climate: Canada's climate can be quite different from what Americans are used to, especially in provinces like Quebec or Manitoba.
Cost of living: While some areas in Canada have a lower cost of living, others, like Toronto or Vancouver, can be quite expensive.
What other countries are attractive for Trump refugees?
I enjoyed the
with Canadian MP Charlie Angus:
Canada sounds great except for the fact that they would not let me live there. I am a very senior citizen and they will not let folks in who cannot contribute to their economy with their labor..
Great post and overview of differences. Our climate is a bit more challenging; but our hearts are warm. Come over if you need to; as you have in the past — always welcome (also please and thank you, and an occasional, eh).
