My favorite couplet here. Public Servant, among your Talarico stanzas:

"And when the planet burns and oceans rise,

he names the crisis with unflinching eyes—"

As a fan of yours and a Texan who voted for James Talarico - I love this so much!

Democracy Defender, your poem in tribute to James Talarico is beautiful!

“He defends the truth of old Cathedrals:” reminds me of truth we must all defend in any form, and especially in journalism and speech now! For that reason, I am sharing a petition here.

🚩A Petition to Protect Truth in Journalism and Licences of Honest Journalists

This petition is to protect our first amendment and stop anyone from pulling licences from journalists who are reporting the truth about the war, instead of reporting the war news, and maybe other news, the ways D. Trump wants them to report it.

I hope many people will read, sign, and share this petition.

I am genuinely confused. It seems from the online debate about James Talarico’s Senate run that in Christianity people get to decide whether or not other people are “actual” Christians or not. And it seems from what I can tell that many of these people believe they are in a position to say someone like Donald Trump is a true Christian and someone like James Talarico is not.

In my Buddhist tradition, we hold with deep reverence Jesus as among the highest examples of pure wisdom and compassion and of using your life in order to be of benefit to others. But the project is for me is to look to such examples to find inspiration to cultivate discernment and ethical conduct in my own life. The project is to rid myself of the afflictions of greed, hatred, and ignorance in my own heart. I am oriented less toward who is hanging on someone’s wall than on how faith is working in their life.

It seems to me that if someone believes both that their religion is superior, and that they get to decide who is a true adherent, they are giving themselves the de facto ability to cast people outside those parameters as inferior. In the context of the pursuit of political power like the current Christian Nationalist movement, that has, to put it mildly, never gone very well.

This orientation toward supremacy based not on ethical conduct or on demonstration of higher qualities, but on self-proclaimed status as the “decider” of what the bible means, seems very dangerous and, at minimum, a very flawed way to choose an elected representative.

What am I missing here?

Beautifully felt, DD, your last stanza sums it up with great poetic elegance.

Thank you Judy. I signed both. Btw I’m glad I don’t live in Texas, the choice would have been impossible for me. Both candidates were excellent for different reasons.
