My Fellow Democracy Defenders,

James Talarico is the future of Texas and America. He is our best hope to defeat MAGA fascists and Christian nationalists in a red state. We must protect immigrants, trans kids, and our climate from anti-scientific bigotry. His speeches bring tears to my eyes. Like Heather Cox Richardson, Jim Acosta, and Cory Booker, his eloquence and bravery have inspired me to write a poem celebrating his victory.

The Sentinel of the Lone Star

In Texas soil where freedom’s roots run deep,
James Talarico rises, bold and clear.
A Senate campaign born of fire, not sleep—
a young voice thundering, “Democracy is here.”

He stands against the gathering authoritarian night,
where Christian nationalism cloaks its iron fist.
With steady heart and unrelenting light,
he defends the fragile promise we can’t risk.

He speaks the truth that shakes the old cathedrals:
“God is nonbinary—Spirit without chain.”
Beyond the rigid pronouns of the ancients,
divine love flows where rigid doctrines wane.

He lifts up trans kids in a world grown cruel,
refuses to let fear turn children into pawns.
Their dignity is no political tool—
he’ll shield their right to simply live and dawn.

Six genders he sees in the human tapestry,
a spectrum radiant, holy, and wide.
While others preach constriction and decree,
he chooses wonder over fear and pride.

And when the planet burns and oceans rise,
he names the crisis with unflinching eyes—
climate change, the moral call of our age,
a fight for the children of tomorrow’s page.

So let the old gods of hatred lose their sway.
Let fear and dogma finally lose their throne.
James Talarico walks the harder way—
