Thank you for sharing this story! I remember the photograph but didn’t know the story behind it. August Landmesser was brave and courageous in spite of the danger he faced! We need more democrats willing to standup and speak out against the Trump administration before he destroys this country!
August Landmesser should be remembered. Dietrich Bonhoefer was another courageous individual. But it was a problem that individuals on their own could not really solve. When we consider oligarchs today we need to remember the role of Standard Oil, General Motors (GM), IBM, Woolworths, Singer, ITT, as well as other companies from the US and other countries, long after 1933-1934. Henry Ford was awarded a high civilian honor by Adolf (Adolph) himself (& Hitler kept a signed picture of HF in his office). "Ford had extremely pro-Nazi management at its plant in Cologne. And Opel [AG, with a huge GM investment) probably profited moe than any single car-maker From Hitler's motorization boom" (Tooze 2006: 133). In Germany free labor was much cheaper for foreign companies than it was at home. Later on, slave labor (concentration camp workers) were rock bottom cheap. Systemic problems require accurate social scientific knowledge. That is why I have spent my career studying Comparative Historical Sociology (CHS, a section of the ASA, the American Sociological Association). To defend Representative Democracy requires more than heroic individual actions (no matter how inspiring that may be & often is). *Toose, Adam. 2006. The Wages of Destruction. The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy. Penguin.*
This is a beautiful reminder of both our better selves and actions needed. Hopefully, we can employ this before our fate is that of these lovers.
PS. I LOVE the rainbow flag flown with the US flags!
