A Poem for Ellen Higgins
Miami made herstory by electing its first ever female mayor
My Fellow Democracy Defenders,
Ellen Higgins has made herstory! She is the first woman in history to become mayor of Miami. She is also the first Democrat in 30 years, riding the blue wave to sweep out the fascists. I have written a poem for her, inspired by her bravery. Diverse women are the future of Democrats like Heather Cox Richardson, Jasmine Crockett, Karen Bass, E. Jean Carroll, and Kamala Harris.
Where the sapphire waters meet the sun-baked shore,
And the humid air remembers the tyrants of yore,
A shadow had gathered, a dangerous hue,
The whispered ambition that liberty undoes.
The structure of freedom, built line by slow line,
Felt the quick, heavy breath of the fascist design.
But the city of refuge, the vibrant, the vast,
Refused to let futures be chained to the past.
When the ballot was cast, and the people decreed,
A new kind of champion planted a seed.
Ellen Higgins stepped forward, the standard held high,
Beneath the bright promise of Miami’s wide sky.
She came not as conqueror, but as the first tide,
A Democratic banner where patriarchy died.
She shattered the ceiling, a resonant sound,
The highest chair claimed on this critical ground.
Herstory she made with the stroke of a name,
Extinguishing the gaslight, ignoring the blame.
Her victory stands as a bulwark, well-set,
Against the closed fist and the unpayable debt.
For to govern by consensus, to listen and hear,
Is the truest defense against politics of fear.
The machinery of change, in her steadying hand,
A shield for the vulnerable across the whole land.
The heat of the vote, the sweat of the fight,
Ensured that democracy held fast to the light.
Ellen Higgins defends, not with weapon or wall,
But with the sheer power of answering the call:
The Mayor of all, where the woman’s voice rings,
The defeat of the darkness that authoritarianism brings.

Beautifully written.
Thank you. 💙💙💙
That was beautiful! Truer words were never spoken!❤️
