NO KINGS ANTHEM: "No Crown, No Throne"

A song for all defenders of democracy to sing together at the No Kings protests on Saturday, March 28th

My Fellow Democracy Defenders,

NO KINGS! NO FEAR! Democracy is here!

I am excited to share the No Kings anthem with you. Press play above and share far and wide! I hope Heather Cox Richardson, MeidasTouch Network, Aaron Parnas, Jim Acosta, Andra Watkins, The Bulwark, Team Zeteo, Paul Krugman, Robert Reich, Jay Kuo, God, and all who fight against fascism will rally the people.

If you enjoy my work, I would greatly appreciate a contribution. My partner and I are struggling after the fascists fired her from her DEI civil service career. Many of my colleagues have been furloughed and we are all afraid that we will become casualties of a permanent reduction in force.

Let’s keep marching in the streets while singing this song to save our sacred democracy!

Here are the lyrics to the song:

No Crown, No Throne

[Tempo: Driving, determined acoustic rock. Imagine stomping feet and raised voices.]

[VERSE 1]

Sunrise on freedom day, a shadow starts to creep
Whispers turn to thunder where promises don’t keep
They talk of kings and loyalty, of power held by one
But the people feel the warning, ‘neath this brilliant sun

A hand that grabs the ballot box, the courts it dares defy /
A poison in the body where true freedom used to lie
They call it strength, they call it right, but we know what they mean:
The crushing boot of fascism, a cruel and deadly scene.

[CHORUS]

NO CROWN! NO THRONE!
We stand for rights the people own!

No king above the law we make,
No tyrant for democracy’s sake!

From sea to sea, in every town,
We’ll tear that fascist vision down!

NO KINGS! HEAR OUR VOICE!
The people’s will is still the choice!

[VERSE 2]

They dream of Project 2025,
a future grim and stark
Where only certain voices matter,
leaving freedom in the dark

Where history gets rewritten,
where difference is a crime
Where justice bends to power,
ignoring space and time.

But look around you, sisters, brothers, standing side-by-side
The teachers, vets, the workers, with nowhere left to hide
The students and the elders, every color, every creed
Refuse to let the dream die, plant a different kind of seed.

[CHORUS]

NO CROWN! NO THRONE!
We stand for rights the people own!

No king above the law we make,
No tyrant for democracy’s sake!

From sea to sea, in every town,
We’ll tear that fascist vision down!

NO KINGS! HEAR OUR VOICE!
The people’s will is still the choice!

[BRIDGE]

This ain’t about one party line, it cuts much deeper still
It’s “Will the Constitution bend to one man’s selfish will?”
It’s “Will the vote still matter?” “Will the peaceful transfer hold?”
Or will the story of our freedom tragically unfold?

We stand on shoulders giants fought,
who pledged their lives, their all
For government of, by, for the people,
standing proud and tall!
This legacy is OURS to keep…
we will not let it fall!

[CHORUS]

NO CROWN! NO THRONE!
We stand for rights the people own!

No king above the law we make,
No tyrant for democracy’s sake!

From sea to sea, in every town,
We’ll tear that fascist vision down!

NO KINGS! HEAR OUR VOICE!
The people’s will is still the choice!

[OUTRO]

No Kings! No Fear! Democracy is here!
No Kings! No Fear! Democracy is here!
No Kings! No Fear! Democracy is here!
(Fade out on chant...)

Key Elements for Performance:

  • Call and Response: The “NO CROWN! NO THRONE!” line is perfect for the crowd to shout back

  • Clapping: Essential for the driving beat

  • Simplicity: The chords and structure are meant to be easy to pick up and sing along to

  • Focus on Principles: Targets the actions and threats (subverting elections, defying courts, Project 2025’s implications, fascist tactics) rather than just the name “Trump,” making it about defending the system itself.

  • Unity: Emphasizes the diverse coalition standing together
